New Hemp Jewelry and the Search for Eco-Friendly Packaging

So I finally had a full day to bang out some hemp jewelry – the last couple of batches I had were either mushroom necklaces or more complicated stuff, so I added in a batch of the sweet and simple for those of you looking for the understated and cool look. The beads featured are either one of a kind or brand new to the store, so you’ll be getting plenty of eye candy. Click here to see all the new shiny things.

The other thing that I’ve been doing is looking for some new eco-friendly packaging. It doesn’t exactly make sense to make a sustainable, eco-friendly piece of jewelry if the packaging is wasteful, after all. The bubble mailers are pretty good on that account, as the outer shell is kraft material which decomposes fairly quickly. It’s just the plastic and paper wrapping I’m using that’s giving me cause for concern. I have finally found a site that does eco-friendly packaging that looks good and doesn’t require me to pay for 1000000 units at once. The company is called Nashville Wraps and it has a line of packaging called Green Way.

So it looks like I’m going to replace my cello bags with compostable, biogradable plastic, organic cotton ribbon, natural fiber organza bags (my favorite discovery) and recycled kraft gift boxes. Yay for new packaging.

So I Went to Anthrocon

This is one of the most interesting experiences I think I’ve had lately. My friend ended up inviting Eric and I to come hang out at Anthrocon in Pittsburgh. I might not be a furry but I certainly appreciate the insanely good art that comes from them, so I was rather excited to go. I saw all sorts of handmade stuff there, a few people off Etsy, and plenty of Deviant Art folks. It was great, and it makes me wonder if I should grab a booth and sell some jewelry there next year. It would certainly be entertaining.

New Shrooms and New Office

It’s time for a lot of new things at Phat Hemp Jewelry. The weather is heating up, so it’s prime time to show off some great handmade hemp jewelry. All made to order bracelets can also be crafted in anklet length, at a small additional cost. Just look under the bracelet options!

New Mushrooms and Other Supplies

So I’m almost out of mushrooms pendants, and I needed to grab some from new and old suppliers. The mushroom above is from a new supplier for me, FireLily and it’s a very cool looking boro shroom. Not exactly my standard enclosed fare, and that’s why I like it so much.

For a supplier that I’ve used before, Australian lampwork artist Saylesjodi is sending some more of those big, phat, and awesome lampwork mushrooms my way.

And in the non handmade but still cool supplies section, I have finally found another mykonos greek bead supplier, Linden Avenue Designs.

Phat Hemp Yearly Inventory Completed

I’ve finally gotten through the reinventory process – something I probably should have done awhile ago. Ordering is back up on Phathemp.com, so if you were holding off by all means head on over. Eric got me an awesome camera for Christmas, so if you see the pictures changing around on the pieces you’ll know what’s going on. Also, I found out that I have a whole boxful of pieces that I haven’t gotten around to photographing, so you’ll be seeing plenty of new pieces coming your way starting in 2010! And of course I’ll be adding new pieces regularly (much more regularly than 2009, that’s for sure). Happy New Year’s!

I discovered last week, after a particularly painful ER visit, that I have a large gallstone and my gallbladder must come out. I am getting it done laproscopically, so in theory I shouldn’t be down and out for long – but just in case, I wanted to let everyone know ahead of time, and I’m expecting to be able to at least sit up enough to craft by the 15th. Should this change I’ll let you all know – and sorry for being so quiet lately, but it was mostly due to the frequent attacks I was getting that was killing my sleep – I hope to bring you a ton of great new designs for the holiday season!

All About Bali Beads

Usually when I incoporate metal beads into my hemp pieces, I prefer to use bali and hill tribe silver beads. These are the same or better silver content than sterling silver beads (.925 to .999), but there is one particular aspect of them that has me choosing them constantly. Well there’s a few reasons – I love the weight that they add to a particular piece, and it also works great for making more men’s jewelry pieces. However my main reason is that these pieces are made by hand in Bali, Indonesia, and you can see the detail in each piece. The Karen Hill Tribe beads are in much the same boat, although with those I’m typically getting their intricate focal pieces instead of spacers. These types are also the ones that tend to have the closer to fine silver content (.999).

Philadelphia Best Fest 2009

Oh man – I got back from Bead Fest on Saturday, but it took me this long to recover so I could type about it. This show is absolutely nuts. It’s run by Interweave, which is one of the largest craft publishers (book and magazine) out there, and it’s almost all beads and jewelry kits. The only other big bead show that I was familiar with was Intergem, which is a lot of jewelry on top of the beads – this bead show is so far apart from Intergem that it’s in a league of its own.

First just let me say – it was two floors of beads. TWO FLOORS. I know it was going to be bad when I saw the floor plan, but a little black and white floor plan is nothing compared to the amazing experience that bead fest philly was. I was intending on doing a walk through of the entire place before buying, but you know what – that only lasted through the first two rows, and then I realized that I was going to be lucky to get through the place before it closed for the day. I and my hapless boyfriend had booked a room at the Radisson next to the convention center, so thankfully I was able to go back the next morning and finish up.

I got an absolute ton of beads – I’ll show off a few of the highlights below, although you can see the full album on my facebook fan page. Because of the amount of handmade bead makers, I spent a lot of time talking to the artisans, although I did also get to check out some great gemstones as well. The absolute best part was when I was done shopping, we went to the sports bar part of the hotel restaurant. It was filled with jewelry makers, crafters, and beaders. If I could find a bar that was always filled like that, I don’t think I would ever have social anxiety again – it was a dream. Other than my incredibly, incredibly sore feet from around five hours of walking through there. I’m buying comfy shoes for next year lol.

Now to the beads:

This is a handmade lampwork bead set and focal by Grace Beads. Her artistic talents just wowed me, and I ended up getting quite a few unique lampwork sets from her. They were pricey, but when you see the sheen of colors under the light, as well as the great designs, you know they’re worth it. She also did the floral rondelles that I love, which I’ve been looking for for quite some time.

Crappy picture I know, but I was trying to get the boxes photographed before I ran outta camera battery. These are gorgeous raku pendants and beads by Olivia of Odd Designs. If you’ve never seen raku ceramic before, you will fall in love with it right away. The depth of colors is just incredible, and it also produces a unique one of a kind look that sets the pieces apart.

The lampwork chili peppers were just too cute to resist, and Eric wants me to make a piece to send to Bobby Flay with them! These were made by Cynthia and they are just super cute.

I FINALLY got to meet my mood bead supplier, Rick from Collective Cottage. He was hanging out and had his second generation mood beads there, so I grabbed a variety of those as well as some of the larger sized mood beads.

These are just a few of the 38 different kinds of beads I picked up there – all new types for me pretty much, other than a few gemstones here and there. I also found two sellers with big hole gemstone beads, which means I can do some great phat hemp pieces with super thick hemp, and still use badass gemstones in them. Now that’s what I call a great find.
