The Many Faces of Square Knots

It’s incredible just how many different ways the square knot can look – take a look for yourself. Please note that these test knots are done with a lower grade of hemp – I have it laying around but it’s way too bunky to use in production pieces, but it does well here!

Here we start with the humble square knot

Here’s what happens if you just do half of the square knot over and over

Here’s a reverse square knot, which is when you switch the carriers with the working strands

Here are three fishbone patterns – the variation occurs if you go in sequential order or if you go from the top with the extra working strands.

This is an alternating square knot pattern – you can see the difference between the lacy and the tight knotted hemp.
